Kirsters Baish| It has been reported that a former Georgia Congressional candidate was taken into custody after she surrendered herself to the McDuffie County Police on Wednesday.
30-year-old Kellie Lynn Collins is being accused of murdering her campaign treasurer.
She is also being charged with grand larceny, as reported by the Augusta Chronicle.
The victim was 41-year-old Curt Cain.
His autopsy showed that he bled out after receiving a gunshot wound to the head. The autopsy was performed by the Aiken County Coroner’s office.
They estimated that he died last Saturday.
The body was found in the apartment that Collins and Cains allegedly shared.
The victim’s blue Subaru was not at the scene, hence the additional grand larceny charges Collins is facing. Police tracked her down out of state.
Former campaign manager for Collins, Clayborn Thigpen, revealed that the two had been living together in Aiken, South Carolina.
Thigpen also stated that he was shocked to hear that Collins killed Cain.
The accused ran as a Democrat for Georgia’s 10th Congressional District seat in November’s upcoming midterm elections, however she withdrew from the race due to personal reasons that were not revealed.
There has been no motive released for the murder. Police have ruled it as a homicide.
The Daily Mail reports:
After she was identified as a suspect, Collins turned herself in to authorities.
‘Without the assistance of McDuffie County Sheriff’s Office, the Aiken County Coroner’s Office and the exceptional work of the investigators of the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, this arrest would not have been possible,’ Aiken County Sheriff Michael Hunt said.
‘We hope this will bring some closure to the family of the victim.’
Cain was working on his MBA at USC Aiken, explained Chancellor Dr. Sandra Jordan.
“Curt was a member of the third on-campus MBA cohort and was on the verge of completing the program next week. According to School of Business faculty, Curt was one of the top students in his class and had a promising future ahead of him,” Jordan explained.
Elizabeth Foy, who is a representative of the Aiken County Democratic Party explained that Cain was also a member.
This is a developing story.
