Kirsters Baish | It seems that everyone is speaking up when it comes to the NFL anthem protests. We’ve heard President Donald Trump’s stance on the situation, we’ve heard from Stuart Varney, and now former presidential candidate and current Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Dr. Ben Carson has given his view. His unique take on the NFL protests that have taken over our Sunday night football sheds new light on the whole matter. It really does seem like Dr. Carson knows a thing or two about how to confront the issue that our country is currently struggling with. His Facebook post on the protests has gone viral, with good reason. The man has a lot of good things to say, and we should all listen.
President Trump delivered a speech at a rally in Alabama last week, and what he had to say shocked many Americans. Some found his words too harsh, others felt that he had a strong message that had to be heard. Trump stated, “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say ‘Get that son of a b—- off the field right now. Out. He’s fired! He’s fired,’”
Following President Trump’s speech, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell decided to release his own statement. He called President Trump’s words “divisive” and let America know he didn’t agree with the President. Then, Dr. Carson felt it was time to go public with his thoughts on the matter.
Dr. Carson posted on Facebook this past Sunday in order to clear up his opinion on the matter. He mentioned that NFL Sundays had always been something special. They used to “represent a time of fun, games and unity.” He went on to explain that now, the NFL has turned into protests against our National Anthem.
Dr. Carson’s Facebook post read:
“Here we are at another NFL Sunday. That used to represent a time of fun, games and unity. I hope we can return to that situation soon. One of the reasons we play the national anthem before the game is to remind us that even though we’re rooting for different sports teams, we are united as a country. That is a wonderful message that we should not allow to be distorted by anyone.
Of course we all have the right to express ourselves, but as the Bible says, there is a time and place for everything. Last week I saw a story about pre-adolescent players being drawn into the “take a knee” protests. Does anyone honestly believe that encouraging even our youth to believe they are victims of our society will actually help us come together?
I think many athletes actually think they are making things better. We would encourage them and all Americans to utilize their influence to truly draw people together and not be manipulated into doing the opposite under the guise of unity.”
It is clear that Dr. Carson truly understands that instead of dividing against one another, our anthem is meant to bring us closer together as one unit. Our country used to enjoy football as an entertaining Sunday pastime, but these protests have turned the game into a political statement.
What these NFL players don’t seem to understand is just what they are doing to the core of our country. They are directly disrespecting the men and women who give their lives to fight for our freedoms. Or, even worse, maybe they do understand what they are doing and just don’t care. One way or another, we have got to put an end to these protests. There is a time and place to protest, but on the football field during the National Anthem simply isn’t it.
Carson went on to speak of the youth football players who followed in the steps of these NFL players and decided to take a knee at their own games. We cannot do this to our youth. Instead of dividing ourselves further and further, we must come together to unite as the great nation we are.
